How to Choose a Rice Cooker That Lasts
Size, inner pot quality and the two features that actually get used — a practical guide before you buy.
Choosing a rice cooker sounds simple until you stand in front of a shelf full of them. Here is what actually matters.
Match the size to your household
Capacity is written in litres of uncooked rice, not cooked. A 1.8L cooker sounds small but feeds a family of four comfortably.
- 1.0–1.5L — two or three people
- 1.8L — a family of four, the most common choice
- 2.8L and above — large families, or if you cook for guests often
Look at the inner pot, not the outside
The outer body is just steel or plastic. The part that decides how long the cooker lasts is the inner pot.
- A thicker pot spreads heat more evenly and burns rice less.
- A good non-stick coating means you are not scrubbing every day.
- Check that a replacement pot is available — it wears out before the cooker does.
A cheap cooker with a thin inner pot will cost you more within two years.
Features worth paying for
Keep-warm is the one feature almost everyone uses. It holds rice at serving temperature for hours without drying it out.
Steaming baskets are genuinely useful for vegetables and fish. Fancy digital menus mostly are not — a simple cook-and-keep-warm switch is what gets used day to day.
Care that doubles its life
Wash the inner pot by hand with a soft sponge. Never use steel wool, and never leave the pot soaking overnight — water creeps under the coating and lifts it.
Wipe the heating plate before every use. A grain of rice stuck under the pot creates a hot spot that scorches the base.
